As its middle classes flee, Iraq is losing skills, open minds and perhaps the hope of renewal. One family's story.
An estimated 2.3 million Iraqis have fled the country since the 2003 invasion. They represent the largest displacement of people in the region since the Palestinian diaspora nearly a half century ago. About 50,000 people escape Baghdad each month. A staggering 1.7 million are displaced within Iraq, while almost 2 million more have sought refuge in Syria and Jordan, 130,000 inEgypt and 50,000 inIran. Even Sweden is feeling the effects of this war: last year alone, 9,000 Iraqis applied for asylum there, and 90 percent of those requests were approved.
hey, i linked to that bbc report too. any idea why they were paying tens of thousands of dollars to get smuggled into sweden when they're accepting most iraqi asylum seekers? that bit i didn't get.
I think it might be because as we know many are so desperate that waiting for applications at the Swedish embassy in Amman or Syria is not an option any longer.
And/or the fact that if you are inside Sweden already it becomes easier to apply for refugee status and get it approved.
It might also be that some Iraqis still do not know that there are options to seek refugee status in some countries. And therefore relay on smugglers to help them out.
Not sure, but these are some reason I could come up with.
oh yeah, for some reason it didn't occur to me at all that they might just be lying about it. i just figured with so many iraqis in sweden somehow word would get around. but i guess also there's enough stories around about people getting sent back that people would worry about it.
"there's enough stories around about people getting sent back that people would worry about it."
Exactly Nadia n. Put above it that many Iraqis in Jordan and Syria are not able to get longer permits for staying there, some even have not been able to get permits at all. This means they fear for their lives there too, afraid of being sent back to Iraq. I have heard from Iraqis in Jordan that this has happened. So in desperation they pay a smuggler to get them out of hell to a safer place.
oh i've hear a lot of stories about deportations in jordan, but i've also heard them about paying for visas to get to european countries legally and it turned out they were bullshitted and their papers were useless. ie like this.
